Place of origin: South-central America , tropical and subtropical Africa and Asia.
Description: Cereus have a characteristic candle-like columnar growth, gray-green to blue in color. About 30 species exist. The C. repandusversion shown here is a miniature because it is in a pot. If planted in the ground it can grow up to 10 m while a height of 34 m has been recorded at the SDM College of Dental Sciences in Karnataka. Mature cacti can produce edible fruit ranging in color from violet-red to yellow.
Grow best: It is fairly low-maintenance and hardy. Requires direct sunlight and well-drained soil. Propagated easily from offsets planted in moist, well-drained soil.
Use: Use as hedge or rockeries outdoors. Also suitable as potted miniatures or in terrariums.
