- Scientific name: Lawsonia iremis
- Place of origin: In northern Africa, western and southern Asia, Northern Australia.
- Description: Tall shrub or a small tree growing up to 8m with spine-tipped branchlets, elliptical leaves and small, cream flowers and many seeded brown fruits.
- Grow best: In any soil and even in drought conditions. Propagation by seeds.
- Use: Ornamental hedge or fence. Leaves are widely used to make dyes (henna) applied to color hair and patterns on palms and feet.
