HOUSEHOLD PLANTS GROWN HYDROPONICALLY

A multitude of common household plants are genetically programmed to form roots when continuously moist. Indoor gardeners can use these survival adaptations to grow their favorite plants in water, without soil. There are a number of flowering and non-flowering plants that can thrive when grown hydroponically, such as orchids, lotuses, and pothoses. They can live this way for a long time and blend into your bathroom and kitchen décor. These plants can be used for your decor or to propagate your existing house plant.

The only requirement is that the water must be changed on a regular basis, and water-soluble fertilizers should be used to provide nutrients, that the plants normally get from soil.

Many indoor or outdoor plants can be grown from a cutting in a water-only medium, in almost any container that can hold water, like a glass jar or a vase.

However glass is prone to algae blooms and if you want low maintenance, considers an opaque vase.

There are different types of plants that need varying amounts of sunlight to grow and some need shade to thrive. So please consider your plants requirement before giving them your windowsill.

You should change your water regularly, do not wait till the water becomes murky or cloudy. Chlorine free water would be preferable. Fertilize your plants with a water soluble fertilizer at quarter strength.

1. Lucky Bamboo

Lucky bamboo is a popular indoor plant kept in water. These plants roots

should be fully covered by water, so the plants roots are kept healthy and

moist all the time. Fertilizer these plants once a month with half strength.

Lucky bamboo should be placed in well-lit area, with good cross ventilation.

2. Pothos

Pothos are easy to grow water plants. They really don’t need much

maintenance, fertilize once a month with water soluble fertilizer. It is vining

plant, so there will be a lot aerial root production. It can handle low light areas

as well.

3. Philodendron

Philodendrons are vining plants just like pothos. They are just as easy to grow

in water as in soil. There are also upright growing philodendrons, they are also

easy to grow in water.

4. Coleus

In water, this beautiful foliage plants root quickly. A 5 inch cutting is more than

enough. Fertilize it once a month and keep it in well-lit area.

5. Aglaonemas

These colorful foliage plants adapts to water like a duck. If you are lucky, they

will even shoot out flowers during the warm seasons. Both in soil and water,

these plants require very little attention from you, just ensure your cutting is

tall enough, so the foliage does not get submerged in water. Keep them in

warm, well lit place.
