Lucky bamboos are not true bamboo. They are more closely related to some
water lilies. They are from the Dracaena family. They will thrive in soil or
hydroponically. These plants are found in tropical rain forests.
This plant is said to bring good luck and fortune in some culture especially the
Chinese. It is believe to be good FengShui, good health, love, fortune and luck
to those who possess this plant at home or at work.
Nowadays, lucky bamboo are sold growing in water bowls. They come 2,3,4 or
even in 5 tiers. Taller the plant is, its believe to have more powers.
We will discuss growing lucky bamboo in soil and hydroponically, as many find
maintaining them quite cumbersome. Here are some simple tips on maintain
lucky bamboo.
1. These plants grow very well in soil. The soil mix should be of
1 part coco peat
1 part compost
1 part river sand.
Pots should have holes at the bottom for good drainage. Water it sparingly,
once or twice a week in small quantity. This way, we avoid bacterial and fungal
attacks on the exposed root stems. Consider using Trichoderma at least once a
month for healthy root development. In soil, these plants can reach a height of
5 feet and easy to maintain them for many years.
2. We must be more aware of bacterial and fungal attack while having
them hydroponically. Consider cleaning the bowl or the container at
least once in 5 days. If you have pebbles any sort of assortment in the
container, clean them as well. Do not use liquid soap, wash them with
clean water thoroughly. Consider washing the plant itself under tap to
remove dirt and dust. This will help the plant with photosynthesis.
3. Whenever you encounter a yellowing stem or a decaying stem, remove
them immediately. This will stop the bacterial and fungal attack
spreading to other root stems. Chuck them away, please do not use
them or pot them separately.
4. The size of the container or the bowl diameter, should be 2 inch bigger
than the plant. Never place the plant in a cramped container as, lucky
bamboos love to spread their roots laterally.
5. Any water soluble fertilizers can be used, but consider using them at half
strength to the recommended dosage on the label. If possible, buy lucky
bamboo specific fertilizers.
6. Lucky bamboos don’t like stale air. There should be good cross
ventilation in the room. Place them by the windows, for it to receive
good air circulation. Plants kept in locked up rooms, will turn yellow
quickly.
7. For frequent bacterial and fungal attacks, consider spraying the plant
with diluted hydrogen peroxide. You can also purchase plant antibiotics,
like streptomycin or oxytetracycline, and follow the instruction on the
label.
